As a rule of thumb, it takes approximately 15 to 20 square feet of tented space per guest. This square footage amount allows space for seating, entertainment and dancing. Tented space needs can be met in different ways. Tents come in a wide variety of sizes. A basic rule for choosing the best tent size is wider and shorter rather than a narrow and long.
From a practical point of view, its usually best to have your party under a single tent. If your tent site has obstacles that limit tent size, smaller tents can be attached to give additional space.(See: Choosing a suitable site).
Some seating arrangements utilize tent space more efficiently than others. Seating 12 guests to a 6 foot round table verses 8 guests to a 5 foot round table will save a significant amount of space. Generally, you should allow at least 4 feet between tables. If you intend on using wait staff, allow at least 5 to 6 feet between tables.
Space must be allotted for every item that is to placed under a tent. (Try our on-line plan makertool or visit our tent sizing guide). Inexperienced party planners will make the mistake of placing key party components in areas that are not under or connected to a main tent. This can make for a rather undesirable situation in the event of rain.
