This page is dedicated to the important early planning phase question, "Can it be done here"? Many couples have their heart set on a location that has meaning to them. The tent just helps make the event realistic at the location that is chosen. On the other hand their are couples that want the outdoor atmosphere of the tented event and the exact location is secondary. Either way, when your considering locations, its good to have some basic information.
Unless you have a large open field, you’ll need to get an idea how much area you will need. As a rule of thumb, a tented reception requires about 15 to 20 square feet of tented area per guest, (see: tent sizing calculator). For 150 guests the average tented space is in the 2400 to 3200 square feet range. Roughly, this size tent requires an area of about 3000 to 5000 square feet when staking is considered.
Once you get an idea of the size area you’ll need, there are some basic things to look for. Large obstacles such as trees, buildings, swimming pools, ECT. Small shrubs can usually be worked around. Fairly flat and level surface, this is not because of the tent, you just don’t want to seat a guest on the side of a hill. Drainage should also be considered just in case of rain. Site variables such as septic systems, buried wires and piping can usually can be safely dealt with. Overhead obstacles such as tree branches and overhead wires can impact tent height. Tents pitch up from 7 feet at the edge to 20+ feet at the center. Smaller tents are available with a 10 to 20 foot center height.
Even if you may have some issues with your site. You may still be able to have a tented wedding at your location of choice. Multiple tents can be used to go around obstacles, (view our 2012 featured wedding) tents can be placed on and over decks, frame style tents can be placed within inches of buildings and trees, staking issues can be minimized by replacing stakes with heavy weights.
